WELCOME TO ENGLEWOOD, FL

Englewood, FL is the personification of the saying, “If you have lemons, make lemonade.”

Back in 1893, when brothers Herbert, Howard, and Ira Nichols bought 2,000 acres of land in the area where the community now stands, they envisioned selling residential acreage tied to the purchase of another 10 acres that owners would cultivate into lemon groves. At that time, lemons were in high demand because they were used to treat scurvy and pneumonia.

While a few owners did manage to plant lemon trees, back-to-back cold winter spells, which saw temperatures plummet to 14 degrees, killed many of the smaller trees. However, the Nichols Brothers quickly pivoted from this disaster, opting to transform the area into a resort destination named after their hometown in Illinois. They promised great hunting, fishing, and water activities. They also built a hotel overlooking Lemon Bay, which catered to wealthy tourists and celebrities.

Because the Nichols brothers successfully turned a lemon of an idea into lemonade, Englewood became one of the first winter resorts in Florida.

Today, Englewood is known for being a popular summer destination. Everything the residents love about their community is loved in return by tourists – stunning beaches, clear blue waters, lush parks, and an array of experiences, from boating and fishing to hiking and bird-watching. In addition, Englewood hosts several events throughout the year, like the annual Englewood Seafood and Music Festival, the weekly Farmers Market, and the monthly Englewood Car Show.

In Englewood, that sweet lemonade continues to pour to this day.
