Cape Haze Pioneer Trail

Opened in 1999, the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail takes hikers and bikers on a scenic journey through a protected greenway following a former railroad route that once led to Gasparilla Island. The trail serves as a remnant of Florida’s phosphate mining past, as it was used to transport phosphate from the Mulberry mines to the ore-loading dock at Boca Grande.

One of the trail’s historical highlights is the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail Park, which commemorates the town of McCall which largely benefitted from the construction of the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad (CH&N) depot in 1905. Visitors will be able to find markers with information on the history of McCall, which was named after the general manager and passenger agent of the railroad. There’s also the historic Placida Bunk House, which was built in the early 1900s for railroad section workers and served as Placida’s first local school, church, post office, and residence for several families.

South Gulf Cove residents planning to spend time at the beach can take the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail to reach the sun-kissed white sands and inviting waters on Boca Grande. There’s a bike path that extends all the way to the southernmost point of the island, where you can enjoy swimming, fishing, and other activities at Gasparilla Island State Park.
